Wildlife Trail Camera

As a keen wildlife amateur photographer for most of my life it was only a few years ago that I started to notice the use of “Trail Cameras” used by wildlife researchers.
As these cameras became more prolific and thus cheaper in price more and more their usage and footage seemed to pop up on wildlife and country programs broadcast by TV companies.

At first I was not that interested in these cameras, I had looked at the Bushnell website as they seemed to be the most popular manufacturer.
Their range is known as the Trophy Cam. and I pondered about which would be suitable for me and then did nothing.
I do not recall when but sometime after I became aware of the Leupold system. I was really taken with the specification and also the fact that in addition to the camera came a wired controller.
This attracted me because it removed the need to take a laptop into the field or to remove and replace the memory cards for a later viewing without knowing if there was anything captured.

Leupold RCX-2 at the time of my interest was the top-of-the-range of this manufactures stable, and still is as I write this.
I obtained a kit from a US supplier which consisted of Camera and controller. I then purchased from a local superstore a Python adjustable locking cable to secure my camera to a tree in the hope of deterring passing thieves.

It soon became clear to me that I needed to find a way of disguising this camera and blending it better into the background.

It was the middle of winter when I first started using one of these cameras, the woodland was bare but as spring bust forth it became easier to hide the camera.

Hidden Trail CameraBark seemed to be the best option and the easiest and so together with the extra foliage that nature provided I set forth and captured some interesting images and videos.

In one of my camera locations I found both badger sett and fox den really close together. Once the fox cubs started venturing out of the den to play they spent a lot of time at the badger set entrances. I captured day and night still as well as video but never caught fox and badger in the same frame or video clip.

Here is one short video clip of an otter checking out the entrance of the badger sett as it was in the river bank it was not far for the otter to travel. Thanks to the trail camera I have proof of an Otter on our small river beck.
